Assess the relationship with your accountant. Most people never do. They expect their accountant to provide a financial statement, make some adjusting entries and prepare their tax returns.

Why? Because most accountants train their clients to expect very little for two reasons:

  1. Fee Management. The simplest way to control costs is to deliver services that meet the basic necessities. This can be a damaging way to manage expenses. Our firm is not the cheapest firm in the area because we provide more than basic compliance and we are not the highest priced firm in town. We are priced in the middle where we think clients receive the proper level of compliance and advice that helps them increase the value of the business. Basic compliance does not enable an accountant to provide any advice or insight.
  2. Comfort Zone Issues. It’s easy to do accounting and prepare reports. What’s hard is helping a client determine how to see changes coming, working with them to adapt to challenges or growth spurts and helping them determine what to do. Most accountants are trained to keep the books. Interpreting what the numbers say and the direction they appear to be headed is not something all firms are comfortable or capable of doing. We are.

Most business owners and individuals are left on their own to run their business. That’s a tough place to be. They are isolated in making managerial decisions because even if they are surrounded with a good management team, many of those decisions can affect the compensation of those employees.
